Exit Survey

Hello,

You have been invited to assist me in the completion of my final project in an effort to complete Eastern Michigan University's Master of Science in Technology Studies program by taking this short survey. The aim of this survey is to gauge general comfortability with the idea of Unmanned Passenger Aircraft (UPA). Approximately 50 people will be asked to complete this survey that poses questions about your perception of safety regarding commercial air travel and a possible transition to pilotless aircraft. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete the survey.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. It is very important for me to learn your opinions.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be compiled only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact me at 412-254-3783 or by email at [email protected].

Thank you very much for your time and support. I really appreciate it!

Please indicate the level at which you agree with the following statements.
Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral On The Issue Agree Strongly Agree
* I enjoy air travel.
* I have had a bad experience with air travel related to customer service, and I do not enjoy air travel as a direct result.
* I feel safe on an airplane.
* I feel safe flying on today's commercial airliners.
* I am confident with the capabilities of today's commercial airliners.
* Today's aircraft are designed with multiple redundancies and backups in case of malfunction or system failure.
* Generally speaking, many things have to go wrong simultaneously to cause an airliner to crash.
* Commercial airliners are built to withstand failures of many systems and still function enough to make a safe landing.
* When faced with an emergency (engine failure, systems malfunction, etc.), a commercial airliner is likely to crash.
* I feel safe knowing professional airline pilots are flying today's commercial airliners.
Strongly Disagree Disagree Neutral On The Issue Agree Strongly Agree
* Airline pilots are well trained.
* I trust that the decisions made by airline pilots keep passengers safe.
* I don't think airline pilots have the capability to prevent a crash in the case of an emergency or system failure.
* I find comfort in the fact that airline pilots are onboard my airplane because their personal safety depends on their performance.
* If airline pilots could control airliners from the ground passing all required safety regulations, air travel would still be just as safe.
* I would fly on a commercial airliner which was being remotely piloted by an airline pilot on the ground.
* If I bought a ticket on a reputable airline and was told after boarding that the airplane would be remotely controlled by a ground based pilot, I would get off the airplane.
* If a ticket to my next destination was 90% off because airlines were using next-generation remotely-piloted aircraft to fly the route, I would buy the ticket instead of paying full price on an aircraft with onboard airline pilots.
* I worry that ground-based pilots may not go to the same extremes as onboard pilots to save an airplane and its passengers during a dire emergency because their lives/safety are not at stake.
* I believe commercial airliners can be designed with complex autopilots which will make human pilots irrelevant.
* I would fly on an airplane which was programmed to get from gate to gate safely with no human interaction.
* If I bought a ticket on a reputable airline and was told after boarding that the airplane was completely automated I would get off the airplane.
* If a ticket to my next destination was 90% off because airlines were using next-generation fully-automated airliners to fly the route and make all the decisions, I would buy the ticket instead of paying full price on an aircraft with onboard airline pilots.
* If a fully-automated commercial airliner had the capability to be taken over by a ground-based human pilot in the event of emergency or system malfunction, I would buy the reduced fare ticket.

* Please indicate your general thoughts on the safety of commercial air travel.

* Please indicate your thoughts about how safe you feel in the hands of today's airline pilots.

* Please indicate any specific concerns about the safety of an airliner which is being remotely piloted by trained personnel (pilots) on the ground.

* Please indicate any specific concerns about the safety of an airliner which is completely automated, with which no direct human interaction is needed.
