Please read the case study and answer the following questions.

Sun Zhigang, a China fashion designer, was arrested by the Guangzhou police because he did not carry his “temporary residence permit” with him. Sun was then detained in a migrant detention centre, where he was brutally beaten 72 hours before his death. Within the first few days of the initial news article published by Guangzhou’s Southern Metropolis Daily, thousands of people had forwarded the article through emails and posted it in the forums online. There was a public uproar and people started to protest against the Chinese government. These articles were promptly removed as the government started filtering the emails circulated. But it was somewhat ineffective and the Chinese government had to abolish the ‘internal passport system’ that killed Sun Zhigang eventually.

Below are some of the quotes that were sent to the Human Rights Watch regarding the Sun Zhigang case.

• "I was astonished to know that a 27-year-old designer was beaten to death by the police in Guangzhou….I feel sad that only two newspapers in China dared to report this atrocity. I'm so ashamed to write this email because we have nobody to complain to in our country….the same thing is happening to a lot of other guys here and I could be one of them, or anybody without power or connections…. Maybe some international pressure will help."

• Please don't tell others my e-mail address, I am worried….By the way, I love my country and I want China to become better and for everyone here to be equal.
