Toy Storage

Hello!

My name is Ashley Siebert and I am a Fourth Year Industrial Design student at the University of Kansas. Industrial Design is a field concerning the design of products which we encounter in everyday life and the human interactions which these objects foster. I am embarking on a project in which I will be designing a toybox which, ideally, encourages kids to put away their toys and develop organizational skills while being a visually pleasing object that parents can enjoy within the home. I myself am not a parent, which is why I need your expertise and first-hand knowledge to aid me in the research process of the design. The following is a short survey regarding the relationships between toys, children, and the home. Your insights are an invaluable part of my design process and I greatly appreciate your time and input.
How old is your child?
What is your household income?
Does your child have a need for a specific space to organize/store his or her toys within the home?
Are there certain types of toys which your child plays with the most? (i.e. Cars, Legos, Barbies, etc.)
What toys never get put away after use? For what reasons do you think these toys do not get put away?
Do you think that sentimentality causes children to leave their toys out?
In other words, do you think that children have an emotional connection with their toys that makes it comforting for them to be able to see them at all times?
Elaborate on your answer to the previous question if you wish.
Does your child have more toys than she or he needs?
How do you determine which toys are "old" or no longer needed?
How do you go about removing such toys from your child's collection?
Are certain toys more difficult to pick up after or organize?
If so, what makes this more difficult?
When purchasing a container to store or organize your child's toys, would you be more concerned with how the object will look in your home or how appealing it will look to your child?
As a parent, please share any thoughts or concerns you may have regarding efficient toy storage. Frequent problems you encounter or general suggestions are very welcome as well.
