Hillside High School Alumni Survey

Hillside High School Alumni Survey

Hello Hillside Alumnus,

I, Kristen Bell Hughes, am an alumnus of Hillside High Class of 1999. Currently, as a psychology graduate student attending North Carolina Central University, I am working on my master’s thesis. As a Hillside graduate, I was truly influenced by my years at Hillside High School. As you know, Hillside is the oldest of the only 5 remaining historically black high schools in North Carolina. The objective of this research project is an attempt to understand what factors impact African American academics in historically African American high schools like Hillside. With the state of education today and lack of research on historical African American high schools, this research is critical. With your help, we can have a better understanding of factors that may have influenced African American academic success during your time at Hillside.

The master's thesis is being conducted in conjunction with the Psychology Graduate Program at North Carolina Central University. In this research, you will be asked to complete a survey that asks questions about how you view your high school academic experience. It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. If you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point.

Please respond as honestly as possible. There are no right or wrong answers to any question or statement to which you will respond. The direct benefit to you for participating in this study, outside of contributing to the knowledge of your community, is that you will also be entered into a raffle for two, $50 gift cards at the completion of the study.

Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. Any data from this research will only be available to Kristen Bell Hughes and members of her research staff. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Kristen Bell Hughes at the email address specified below. You may also contact Dr. Jonathan Livingston at (919)530-7776.

If you have any questions regarding your rights as a human subject in this study, please contact the chair, Dr. Evelyn Yeh at (919)530-7333 of North Carolina Central University Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects or for additional information, visit the website at http://osrp.nccu.edu/committees/all_frame.html .
