6S Travel and Diversity Survey

Test Survey

Hello STSGrad listserve member!

This is a short survey to get your feedback on two important issues in 4S and the broader STS community:

- Funding to come to 4S meetings

- Diversity issues

We only have 10 questions for you, so it won't take long to do. Please take a few minutes to complete it and help make 4S a better academic community.

We're treating this survey as we would any research. Rest assured that your participation in the survey is completely voluntary, and we see no foreseeable risks associated with the survey. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from the survey will be reported only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions, contact Matt Harsh, 4S Student Rep, by email at the email address specified below.

Thank you very much for your time! Please start the survey by clicking on the Continue button below.

Sincerely,

The 6S Coordinating Committee

Travel and Funding Logistics
How many 4S conferences have you attended?
Have you ever NOT attended a conference because of financial constraints?
If yes, did you have a paper accepted at this conference and still not attend?
Where do you usually turn to for financial support to travel to conferences? (Please indicate source you use such as departmental support, graduate student associations, and others)
Have you ever applied for funding from 4S itself?
If yes, how did you find out about this funding opportunity?
How much did it cost you to travel to the 4S this year? (Please estimate total in USD)
If you applied for funding to travel to 4S in Vancouver, how much did you apply for? From what sources? Did you receive funding?
Please give your understanding of the amount you were ALLOWED to apply for from each source and what was eligible for reimbursement (such as airfare, food, accommodations, registration fees, etc).
If you could improve graduate student funding options (either in your department or within the 4S) what would be the single-most important reform you would call for?

Diversity

Two years ago, 6S has formed a committee to examine diversity issues within 4S and the broader STS community (i.e., diversity of topics addressed at conferences, “minority” representation among participants, etc.), The questions below are our first attempt to gather information on these issues from the larger 6S membership. The Diversity Committee would appreciate your thoughts!
Under the broad heading of "diversity," are there any concerns within 4S or the wider STS community that you would like to see addressed?
Based on your experiences at other professional conferences, how do you feel diversity is addressed in those settings? What could the 4S learn from other professional organizations (positive or negative lessons)?
Do you consider yourself a minority within the 4S and/or any broader community?

If you would like to join the 6S Diversity Committee please contact Francisco Dóñez at [email protected]
