Sexual Orientation and Sex Research: Which Behaviors Constitute "Having Sex" Among Lesbians in the Eastern United States?
For this research, lesbian women are asked about their definitions of what constitutes "having sex". The survey is an adaptation from a survey developed by Sanders and Reimisch (1999). Previous research indicates that people define sex differently and that sexual behavior may be over-reported or under-reported on sexual behavior surveys due to the difference in perception of what constitutes having sex. Much of the previous research has been conducted with students and one research focused on individuals living with HIV/AIDS. For this research, the researcher focuses on a lesbian sample to examine how perceptions about sex may differ if intimate interactions are not limited to individuals with opposite gender.
