Project Description

The purpose of this project is to assess direct and indirect media influences on college students¡¦ drinking behavior. Subjects will be invited to participate in an online survey answering questions regarding to their media habits, drinking attitudes and behaviors, and their perceptions of other students on campus.

Project Abstract

As binge-drinking emerged as one of the major problems on college campuses, media portrayal have often been held responsible for this consequence. While past research focused on direct media effects on personal attitudes toward drinking or perceived drinking norm, this research proposes to explore an indirect path of media influence on perceived drinking norm as well. The idea of presumed influence suggests that any change in one's behavior is a response to one's anticipation of how others would react to the media content. Thus, it proposes an indirect path of media influence.
