Project Description

PhD research into information security awareness amongst UK Production & Tooling Sector SMEs.

Project Abstract

This project aims to assist Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the UK production machinery and tooling sector to assess and manage their information security risks.

The project will investigate Information Technology (IT) trends that are affecting SMEs including commercial off-the-shelf packages (COTS), application service providers (ASPs) and component frameworks such as Microsoft.NET.

It will research Information Security Guidelines such as ISO/IEC 17799 and the Systems Security Engineering Capability Maturity Model (SSE-CMM).

Aspects of Security Guidelines relevant to SMEs due to emerging IT trends will be modelled using narrative and a visual modelling language such as the Unified Modeling Language (UML).

The main objective of this project is to provide the chosen sector SMEs with a framework model to map their IT usage and security capability onto a set of Information Security Guidelines.

A key deliverable will be a set of Information Security Guidelines for SMEs in the production and tooling sector. The guidelines will be evaluated by a combination of peer-review and with industry practitioners.
