Project Description

Restoration versus Preservation in Oils Museum Viewpoints and Techniques Analyzed

Project Abstract

Many different techniques have been used to restore and preserve oil paintings. Some of these paintings have been damaged in a variety of ways, and in different magnitudes, from simply showing their age in fine cracks to having to endure soot and pollution to natural (ex. floods/fires) and unnatural disasters (ex. defacing with acid). What current methods are used to repair these paintings and what new technologies are available that may do an even better job? Is restoration or preservation the answer? This study will attempt to answer these questions as well as conduct a survey of many major museums in the US and abroad who house these important pieces, and what policies and techniques are employed to preserve them for future generations.
