Making a question required (validated) - Validation and Display Settings

Making a question required (validated):

When you add questions to a survey, by default, validations are turned off. When validations are not enabled, respondents can continue with the survey without selecting answers. If respondents go through all the pages in the survey without selecting answers, the response is still considered as complete. You can enable validations to make a question required so that respondents can continue with the survey only after responding to the questions.

  • Click on
    • Login »  Surveys »  Edit
  • Hover the mouse towards the question number on the right hand side, and click on the Edit icon.

  • Click on Settings >> Validation and Display Settings and turn the Validation On
  • Click on Save

For various different question types we provide additional specific advanced validations. They are as follows:

Text Input Question Types - Open Ended Text validation:

  • When validation is enabled for a text input question, you can also set up a character limit. When the character limit is 0, respondents can enter unlimited characters.

  • When validation is enabled for a numeric input question, you can set both a character limit and the numeric data range. If any of these are set to 0, it means the respondent can enter any number of characters and using any numeric range.
  • When validation is enabled for an email address, the validation engine will allow only an email address to be entered.

Multiple Select type Question:

For multiple select type questions, respondents by default can select as many options as they want. We provide two possible options:

  • Select As Many As N out of M answer options: For example select as many as 3 out of 5 answer options
  • Select Exactly N out of M answer options: For example select exactly 3 out of 5 answer options

  • Constant Sum Value: Validate the total value in a constant sum question. For example, Constant Sum Value: 100. The engine will not allow any sum higher than 100.

  • Sum Value from Another Question:: You can set this up so a value entered by respondents in an earlier question will be piped in to the validation and checked.
