SDMS Foundation Research Grant Application

Purpose: The SDMS Foundation Research Grant and Evans Undergraduate Research Grant programs provide support for innovative research projects which advance the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Applicants are required to present a topic of unique or immediate relevance to the profession and the SDMS Foundation, to undergo education and mentorship throughout their research, and to submit their findings to the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS) for publication. Grant funding may be used to support the collection or analysis of data and other costs of performing the approved research.

Grant application periods: Applications for research grants will be accepted by the deadlines for each cycle listed below and reviewed during the months of April and November each year:
  • March 31 Deadline (Cycle 1 - SDMS Foundation Research Grant)
  • October 31 Deadline (Cycle 2 - SDMS Foundation Research Grant and Annual Cycle Deadline for Evans Undergraduate Research Grant)

Instructions: To apply for either grant, please fill in the information on the next pages as completely and accurately as possible. Be sure to upload the required attachments. It is your responsibility to ensure that the application is completed fully - failure to follow instructions and properly complete the application will result in disqualification.

Notification: The SDMS Foundation will notify applicants whether they have been awarded the grant by no later than 45 days following the application deadline. All applicants will be notified via email.

Eligibility:
To be eligible for an SDMS Foundation Research Grant, an individual must:
  • Be a current member of the SDMS at both the time of application and the time of grant payments;
  • Have a research project planned to begin with 6 months of the application cycle deadline and end within 12 months of the cycle deadline;
  • Present a unique problem statement that has immediate relevance to the profession and the SDMS Foundation;
  • Demonstrate the support of their employer, institution, or other applicable parties for the time and/or resources required to complete the research;
  • Present proof of Institutional Review Board approval and/or Human Subjects Research approval (as applicable);
  • Be willing to accept the mentorship and/or peer review of research methodologies by other qualified experts in the field; and
  • Be willing to author and submit the results of the research as a manuscript to the JDMS for potential publication.

To be eligible for an Evans Undergraduate Research Grant, an individual must:
  • Be a current member of the SDMS at both the time of application and the time of grant payments;
  • Be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in sonography or a related discipline (proof of enrollment required);
  • resent a unique problem statement that has immediate relevance to the profession and the SDMS Foundation;
  • Demonstrate the support of their educational program, as shown by designating a project mentor responsible for assisting in the project's completion;
  • Present proof of Institutional Review Board approval and/or Human Subjects Research approval (as applicable);
  • Be willing to accept the mentorship and/or peer review of research methodologies by other qualified experts in the field; and
  • Be willing to author and submit the results of the research as a manuscript to the JDMS for potential publication

Only one SDMS Foundation grant and one SDMS Foundation Scholarship may be awarded to the same individual within a calendar year.
