Dear Built Environment Professional,

South Africa has a shortage of engineers and Built Environment professionals. South Africa faces a challenge to retain these skills within the industry. The rate of young engineers and
Built Environment professionals entering the sector does not match the attrition rate due to retirement, emigration, career change etc.  Given the shortage of engineers and Built Environment professionals and the costs associated with replacing employees who have left an organisation, it is critical for employers to retain their talented employees and to manage them in such a way that their productivity levels remain consistently high.

The purpose of the research is to establish if engineers and other Built Environment professionals in this country are happy.  Happiness refers to one’s judgement of the overall quality one’s own life-as-a-whole as favourable. Multiple factors affecting happiness have been identified. The research aims to provide the statutory councils associated with the Built Environment a barometer of happiness levels in the industry. Interested parties will have access to this information via the each council’s newsletter.
