Evaluating Stress And Sleep: The Pennebaker Expressive Writing Paradigm As A Coping Mechanism
 
You are being invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Please ask me if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information. Take time to decide whether or not you wish to take part.
 
What is the purpose of this study?
The purpose of this study is to explore the potential benefits of expressive writing tasks in individuals who report poor sleep, seeking to understand to what extents it affects both sleep status and stress levels.
 
Why have I been chosen?
You have been chosen to take part in this study because this research project aims to assess a group of participants who report dissatisfaction with their sleep pattern.
 
Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you do decide to take part you will be given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason by notifying the researcher, which will lead to the elimination of all your data from the study.
 
What will happen to me if I take part?
If you give your consent to participate in this study, you will be given 4 separate psychometric tests to assess your coping strategies, your sleep status, and your stress levels. After completion, you will be randomly allocated to one of two groups; either a control group, or a  diary group. After 1 week, you will be asked to complete the same 4 psychometric tests again.
 
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There are no direct disadvantages or risks involved in taking part. However, it is possible that you might feel uncomfortable writing about your problems regarding sleep and stress.
 
 
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
The possible benefits of taking part in this study include positive outcomes in sleep and stress, with a better coping process.. The findings will also increase the researchers understanding of how creative narrative affects the well-being of individuals with poor sleep and stress.
 
 
Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?
All information collected from you will be stored, analysed and reported in compliance with the Data Protection Act (1998).
 
What will happen to the results of the research study?
The results of this study will be published as part of an undergraduate dissertation.
 
 
Who has reviewed the study?
The MCS Ethics Committee has reviewed this study.
