The Native American Institute and the School of Planning, Design and Construction at Michigan State University are conducting research through a grant from the North Central Region Center for Rural Development. The purpose of this research is to examine the use and impact of the 2012 Hearth Act in leasing tribal trust lands and the development of best practices. This Survey may be followed by additional interviews, surveys and/or webinars for the purpose of examining how tribes are using the Hearth Act and its impact on tribal sovereignty. This research aims to improve the understanding and use of the HEARTH ACT.

As a participant in this research, you are being asked to answer interview questions related to your experience with tribes and in land leasing of tribal lands. You must be at least 18 years old to participate in this research. Your participation in this research is completely voluntary. You have the right to say no. You may change your mind at any time and withdraw. You may choose not to answer specific questions or to stop participating at any time. Your confidentiality will be protected to the maximum extent allowable by law. Your name and title will not be used in any publication. The estimated time to complete this survey is approximately 10 minutes. As a participant, you may request a copy of this consent letter for your records.

The researchers are employed by Michigan State University. The data collected will be used for a sponsor report and may be used for a graduate thesis. You will receive no compensation, either financially or otherwise, for participating in this research. Your participation is strictly at-will.
