Healthcare Leadership Development: The path to success

The development of leaders in health care has never been a more pressing concern. With the advent of the retiring baby-boomers, we are facing a significant leadership sustainability gap. Leaders are promoted sooner than in other industries and often with less formal leadership training (Leatt & Porter, 2004). This paper will demonstrate through the literature the core competencies that leadership will need to ensure organizational effectiveness in these challenging times. It will also endeavor to consult three main leadership groups within our organization to determine their perceived leadership requirements. Through a comparative analysis of the results of this consultation and the literature review, I hope to demonstrate the congruency between the values leadership competencies within our organization and those competencies identified in the literature review. This paper will follow up with an action research framework for moving forward from the identified competencies towards a practical approach for fostering these competencies within our organization.
