Project Description

BENEFIT OR BURDEN: WHAT IS THE EFFECT ON THE QUALITY OF DUTCH AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLIERS ADOPTING THE ISO/TS 16949 STANDARD?

Project Abstract

Within the automotive industry managing quality throughout the supply chain sector is of paramount importance: the margins are thin and dont allow rework, the majority of the activities of manufacturing cars are outsourced under long term agreements and the cost associated to recall activities, caused by poor quality, are massive. The rationale for choosing this research subject is grounded in a previous assignment written on quality management on a related topic. Also my current employer, NAVTEQ, is a supplier to the automotive industry. It has adopted the ISO/TS 16949 standard which has become the de facto quality management standard in the automotive supplier industry. After doing an initial literature survey I concluded that little research has been published on effects of the ISO/TS 16949 standard on the quality of the supply chain. By choosing this subject I hope to be able to provide a contribution to improving the performance of the automotive supply chain and to add to science on the area of supply chain and quality management.
