Survey for Research Project - Computer Crime
There are many approaches to determine the very beginnings of computer crime and here especially the most frequently used term of the hacker respectively the action of hacking something. The two major theories were developed by Bruce Sterling in his book “The Hacker Crackdown” and by Douglas Thomas in “Hacker Culture” inspired by Stephen Levy’s book “Hacker”.
Douglas Thomas connects the term hacker with the development of computers itself while Bruce Sterling sees the development of hacking as a natural consequence of events from the past.
