Participant Information Statement - UNSW HREC Approval No: 09033

Purpose of study
This study is being carried out by researchers at the University of New South Wales. This study aims to evaluate whether people use music to manage their mood in various day to day situations; also whether people’s music choice varies according to their personality type and when they are depressed.

Who can take part?
To be eligible to participate, you must:
- be over 18 years of age
- have access to a computer and the internet
- be computer literate with the ability to read and write English.

What is involved?
We will not need any identifying information from you and the survey is completely anonymous. If you decide to participate you will be directed to the study website whereupon you will be asked to answer a number of questions about your personality, mood, and depression history. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire about your music listening behaviour and any musical training you may have. Altogether, this should take about 30 minutes.

Risks and benefits
This survey provides an opportunity for participants to contribute to research on reasons for listening to music in everyday life and the relationship between music self selection, personality and mood. The information you enter is completely confidential. Some of the questions will ask about your current mood and past history of depression. The risk of causing distress is low, however should you become distressed, you must contact your clinician, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the crisis call number of your closest hospital.
