It can be useful to your research if and when you want to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure out which items are best placed in what categories by your customers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritize or rank products\/services by importance or usage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinpoint misleading or unclear labels, based on mixed results<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce the number of categories, based on which categories are ignored the most<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Open card sorting <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is when the respondents define the categories, rather than the moderator pre-defining them. So respondents can give any category-answer that comes to mind for an item, rather than being confined to one type of response. It can be useful to your research if and when you want to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out how people understand or conceptualize your products\/services, including their expectations or perceptions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generate new ideas from your customers for how to structure or label your products\/services.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare your products\/services to those of competitors to see if those perceptions, expectations, and structure are aligned.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What you have displayed on your cards can represent a variety of things. You can include text, images, or both if you want to avoid obscurity or confusion. Examples of cards with <\/span><b>text<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical objects<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concepts<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phrases<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">News headlines\/titles<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advertisements or claims<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of cards that have <\/span><b>imagery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> displayed include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical objects (e.g. clothes, appliances, furniture)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logos<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designs for portfolio or photography websites (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For when you want to come up with ideas for how to best group images on a website -OR-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For when you just want to know how customers think of your sketches or designs)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When setting up a card sorting exercise, make sure that you follow these steps<\/h3>\n<h4>Put together a list of 30-60 topics<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no hard limits for this, but this range of topics is recommended. The reason for this is because you want to make sure you have enough useful data to allow you to make informed decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*If you decide to run a closed card sorting exercise, using more than 60 topics can work to your advantage.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to brainstorm and decipher all of the different info that you\u2019d like to include, whether that be for an inventory, or a website, etc. Reviewing any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/organizational-chart\/\">organizational charts<\/a>, sitemaps, or content audits can also be very useful in knowing beforehand what list of items your customers find the most important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Review all of your topics (cards) and make sure each topic could be represented and grouped within a concept or an item<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever your list of topics may be, it\u2019s vital that they are all on the same conceptual level and are similar enough to each other (e.g., you don\u2019t want to have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Sports\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Basketball\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be two topics in your deck). At the same time, make sure your topics are distinguished enough to be categorized differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>You\u2019ve run the exercise and have collected the data &#8211; then what?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start interpreting the results, it\u2019s good practice to review the overview\/participant data, which includes the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">time frame<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in which participants participated in the exercise (date and time)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The actual <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number of participants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have completed the exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">average time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it took for members to complete the exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Start analyzing the data<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes searching for the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeating -or- common patterns you find among the participants<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarities as well as differences among your different audiences\/segments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anomalies that you wouldn\u2019t have expected<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any card labels that are left aside more frequently than others, so that you, the moderator, can determine if the card labels are unclear or they\u2019re outliers and don\u2019t fit with the rest of the categories<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>General guidelines and best practices so that you can maximize your card sorting insights<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have at least 30-50 participants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure the participants you recruit represent your market<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have too much information, or too many topics, try to just stick with the main attributes that you\u2019re evaluating<\/span><b> &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the more topics that you have filtered down, the easier it will be more respondents to comprehend the task. Insights will be much stronger for the moderator to observe.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure to provide all of the essential instructions for participants<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mention there are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no right or wrong answers<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this exercise. It also helps to provide why they are being asked to card sort and provide examples of how the exercise work for them to follow.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be too obscure<\/span><b> &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is essential that you\u2019re explanatory enough so that participants have a good idea of what the content might relate to or be about. If you\u2019re worried about the wording across cards to be too similar, use imagery in your cards as well to help clarify the text.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To
