These two related, but separate constructs, represent the first steps on the pathway from prospect to customer.\u00a0Awareness should be measured in two ways \u2013 aided awareness vs unaided awareness, and that is what we are going to explore in this post.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Aided Awareness vs Unaided Awareness<\/h2>\n<p>Unaided awareness is captured via an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/open-ended-questions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open-ended question.<\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b>For example:<\/p>\n<p><em>Please name three brands of canned vegetables?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unaided awareness questions capture those brands in the consumer\u2019s mindset. Aided awareness, the next step in the process, provides a pick list from which respondents can choose the brands they are aware of. This list must be randomized and be in a multiple response question format where they can select any or all brands they have the\u00a0awareness of. Expect to see a lift in the percentage any brand receives between aided awareness vs unaided awareness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A word of caution &#8211; \u00a0the constructs of awareness and familiarity are not interchangeable. We can be aware of a product, service or political candidate, but that does not mean we are familiar with them. Familiarity implies a deeper level of knowledge. Consumers are more apt to select the brands they have the highest level of familiarity with. There are exceptions, such as when one receives a significant promotional offer that can shift a consumer\u2019s choice toward a brand they are less familiar with.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>LEARN ABOUT:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/brand-health\/\">Brand health<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of a familiarity question:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How familiar are you with Acme, Inc.?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Not at all familiar<\/li>\n<li>Slightly familiar<\/li>\n<li>Moderately familiar<\/li>\n<li>Very familiar<\/li>\n<li>Extremely familiar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the survey designer, you can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/adding-logic-online-survey\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Add Logic to An Online Survey\u00a0<\/a>to populate the categories with those brands the respondent stated they were aware of from the aided awareness question. This ensures a higher level of validity in that participants are not asked to rate brands they are unfamiliar with.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is to employ a validation measure using open-ended questions. In the current age of information overload, it is quite possible an audience member may have heard of a brand or company simply in passing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/follow-up-questions\/\">Follow-up questions<\/a>, such as <em>\u201cWhat aspects can you tell me regarding Brand X?\u201d<\/em> allow the researcher to probe deeper. Respondent comments can be matched against known facts about a brand or spokesperson providing a validated measure of awareness or familiarity.<\/p>\n<p>The measures should be profiled against your common segmentation bases including demographics, product usage, and geographic data to provide a big picture.
