

{"id":4254,"date":"2011-04-18T10:49:40","date_gmt":"2011-04-18T10:49:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/?p=4254"},"modified":"2011-04-18T10:49:40","modified_gmt":"2011-04-18T10:49:40","slug":"can-random-acts-of-kindness-be-a-profitable-marketing-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/can-random-acts-of-kindness-be-a-profitable-marketing-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Random Acts of Kindness Be a Profitable Marketing Strategy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4256 size-medium\" title=\"Future\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/future-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>The really cool thing about technology is that it awakens sleeping opportunities that just weren&#8217;t feasible to do manually.<\/p>\n<p>A great example of this is outlined in the latest Trendwatching Brief. \u00a0They call it the <a href=\"http:\/\/trendwatching.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Random Acts of Kindness Trend<\/a>. \u00a0 The briefing brings up \u00a0a couple of interesting morsels for your thinkng:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Brands that are literally giving away products and services for seemingly NO REASON &#8212; why would they do that? \u00a0How can any company make money doing that?<\/li>\n<li>Technology\u00a0voyeurism\u00a0&#8211; &#8211; Brands using consumers&#8217; status updates to identify who they are going to be randomly kind to. \u00a0WHAT ABOUT PRIVACY?!<\/li>\n<li>Research, Listening or Both &#8212; So what is this? \u00a0Is it market research? \u00a0Is it listening? \u00a0Is it selling &#8212; WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">I&#8217;m being dramatic to make a point.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketingcharts.com\/uncategorized\/nice-brands-dont-finish-last-16514\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nice brands don&#8217;t finish last<\/a>: You bet your bottom dollar that these companies and brands are well aware of their profit calculation and are using their marketing dollars wisely. \u00a0There must be some kind of human greed trigger that says &#8220;NO &#8211; don&#8217;t give anything away! \u00a0Mine! Mine! Mine!&#8221; \u00a0Actually, nothing can be further from the truth. \u00a0I believe that there is an old Buddhist saying that says something like &#8211; whatever you want for yourself, give it to someone else first. \u00a0And that&#8217;s exactly what these brands are doing. \u00a0It&#8217;s really just a choice about where to invest your money. \u00a0And these companies choose to invest where they actually CONTROL the cause and the effect. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">Say you had $10,000. \u00a0You can take that $10,000 and invest it in a series of full page ads that run in a popular magazine. \u00a0You write the check, develop the ad and it runs. \u00a0From the time you&#8217;ve placed that ad &#8211; you&#8217;ve lost all control of the impact that money makes on your business.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">or<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">You can take your $10,000 and invest it in literally purchasing some loyal customers and raving fans by doing what these companies did &#8212; giving products and services away to people for whom it means SOMETHING BIG at that very moment. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">If you take the example of the &#8220;poor&#8221;KLM traveler who was going to miss a football (soccer) game while he was in NYC and received a guidebook of NYC with all the football bars highlighted so he could watch on TV &#8212; awww &#8211; isn&#8217;t that sweet? \u00a0How many people do you think this guy is going to tell to fly KLM? \u00a0And what did that cost them? \u00a0A few minutes online and the cost of a guide book. \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>Research is Going Real Time<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>The point I&#8217;m trying to make is that traditional research is very time intensive and we&#8217;re living in a very here and now economy. \u00a0I&#8217;m willing to bet that these companies and brands weren&#8217;t looking at their Random Acts of Kindness as being research &#8212; but I think that a lot of research skill went into making that happen.<\/div>\n<div>I&#8217;m excited about the prospect of research expanding its reach into so many marketing opportunities that make a difference and provide immediate gratification .<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 14px; line-height: 23px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The really cool thing about technology is that it awakens sleeping opportunities that just weren&#8217;t feasible to do manually.
