{"id":4362,"date":"2011-05-25T07:10:31","date_gmt":"2011-05-25T14:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/?p=4362"},"modified":"2024-07-14T23:20:21","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T06:20:21","slug":"word-clouds-and-the-budget-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/word-clouds-and-the-budget-debate\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the the Paul Ryan and Obama Budget Debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Word Clouds and the Budget Debate:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The news from Washington these days is dominated by the great government debt debate.\u00a0 In early April the Republicans laid out their plan for debt reduction with Congressman Paul Ryan\u2019s \u201cPath to Prosperity\u201d.\u00a0 A couple of weeks later the Democrats answered with Obama\u2019s version of how to balance the books.\u00a0 While you certainly heard about these plans in the news, how many of you actually had a chance to sit down and read them?<\/p>\n<p>At 35,000 words, Ryan\u2019s \u201cPath to Prosperity\u201d is a budget epic.\u00a0 While the Obama plan is shorter it\u2019s not exactly a quick read either. \u00a0Want a quick and easy glimpse into each plan and the type of language used?\u00a0 Check out the results from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/word-cloud-generator\/\">Word Cloud generator<\/a> below from each plan:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ryan\u2019s \u201cPath to Prosperity\u201d<\/em><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4364 size-full\" title=\"Ryan's Path to Prosperity Word Cloud\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/screenhunter_08-may-16-11-181.gif\" alt=\"Ryan's Plan\" width=\"819\" height=\"521\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Obama\u2019s Plan<\/em><\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4365 size-medium\" title=\"Obama's Budget Plan Word Cloud\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/screenhunter_10-may-16-11-20-300x163.gif\" alt=\"Obama's Plan\" width=\"300\" height=\"163\" \/> Some interesting trends quickly appear when looking at these two images.\u00a0 Obama uses the word \u201cdeficit\u201d heavily, whereas Ryan hardly mentions \u201cdeficit\u201d choosing instead to focus on \u201cdebt\u201d. \u00a0Both Ryan and Obama use the term \u201cspending\u201d with similar frequency, but in the Obama text \u201cMedicare\u201d and \u201cMedicaid\u201d feature much more prominently.\u00a0 \u00a0Ryan heavies up on the use of \u201cTax\u201d whereas Obama is much more reserved with this word.\u00a0 Obama speaks about building a \u2018framework\u2019 while Ryan focuses on the \u201cbudget\u201d itself.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Ryan\u2019s favorite word is, \u201cGovernment\u201d and Obama\u2019s favorite word is \u201cPresident\u201d (and here, both men remind us what politicians like talking about the most:\u00a0 <em>themselves<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>While Word Clouds won\u2019t tell you everything you need to know about the budget debate, they will quickly highlight trends and areas for further analysis.\u00a0 They also make great presentation material.\u00a0 As researchers we see a lot of value in Word Clouds, which is why we\u2019ve recently added the functionality to QuestionPro.\u00a0 Now you can quickly and easily generate Word Clouds for all of your free response questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Here\u2019s how it works<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Word Clouds summarize free response text based on the frequency which different words are used.\u00a0 This information is then formatted into a \u2018Cloud\u2019 where the font size and color represent the relative frequency of different terms.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Where can I access Word Cloud?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within QuestionPro go to:\u00a0 Surveys \u00bb Analytics \u00bb Text Analytics \u00bb Tag Cloud<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4366 size-full\" title=\"QP Word Cloud\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/qp-word-cloud.gif\" alt=\"image\" width=\"697\" height=\"629\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Word Clouds are available for which question types?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Word Cloud is available only for Open Ended Text Comment Box type questions.
