

{"id":60166,"date":"2018-07-26T22:22:47","date_gmt":"2018-07-27T05:22:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/?p=60166"},"modified":"2018-07-26T22:22:47","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T05:22:47","slug":"seeing-the-entire-iceberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/seeing-the-entire-iceberg\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeing the Entire Iceberg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60167\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Seeing-the-entire-iceberg_V01.jpg\" alt=\"Seeing the entire iceberg\" width=\"992\" height=\"594\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 80s, Sidney Yoshida famously concluded that there was an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8220;iceberg of ignorance&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; the metaphor said that at the top of the organization, executives were only aware of 4% of the problems that were impacting the frontline workers. This finding was validated by numerous employees (and employers, even) who felt out of touch from one another and began to create systems that would work to close that gap. Systems of communication, research, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ideascale.com\/resource\/employee-engagement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">employee engagement<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ThinkWay Strategies proposed that the &#8220;iceberg of ignorance&#8221; actually went both ways<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: not only were executives unaware of the challenges faced by frontline employees, frontline employees also didn\u2019t know of the concerns and challenges that executives faced at the top. Discovering this gap actually helped open up an opportunity for employee engagement, offering every employee (regardless of company level) a shot at serving the company purpose if executives started involving all levels of staff in their challenges, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-60168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Seeing_the_Iceberg_-_insert_image.png\" alt=\"The iceberg of ignorance\" width=\"677\" height=\"482\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now the lens has widened so that organizations are trying to seeing the entirety of the multidimensional \u201ciceberg\u201d when it comes to addressing any company\u2019s major challenges. And this again means facing ignorance from all sides &#8211; looking first for the problems that an organization needs to solve (and developing a robust and rich understanding of those problems first) and then also engaging everyone in the challenge of offering solutions to those problems. Some people are afraid that regarding problems and solutions on this behemoth scale will be daunting or dispiriting to participants, but the truth of the matter is &#8211; it\u2019s actually beneficial to see the entire iceberg. Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontline staff feels engaged at all levels to come together to hear and weigh on issues that matter to them. They can uplevel their problems democratically and visibly. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executives can magnify their collective intelligence which helps in strategic problems solving as they gather a wealth of ideas to diversify their input and options. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPurpose\u201d isn\u2019t something that the elite have access to. Now everyone has the ability to impact an organization on equal footing, injecting their job with more meaningful purpose. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organizations maximize their resources because people aren\u2019t defined entirely by their department or job description &#8211; they can access interest, skill sets, and talent from anywhere in an organization. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This list certainly isn\u2019t exhaustive, but it describes a workplace that I\u2019d enjoy working in.
