<\/a>Have you noticed how viral “Best of..” or “Top (pick a number)” lists are? \u00a0It’s really amazing. \u00a0There must be some psychological catnip in these lists or polls that makes them impossible for humans to resist. \u00a0Because when we see a top – anything list — we just have to click on the thing to see if a brand that we are associated with is on it.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you WANT to be on the list and sometimes you DON’T want to be on the list. \u00a0It seems that I have a knack for owning and being part of brands that are on the “Worst” lists. \u00a0Over the years, it’s either made me want to avoid the list altogether (except that I can’t) or it’s made me want to look at the list just to “pick the scab” of wondering why it is that I seem to like places and things that other people hate.<\/p>\n

Here — let me give you an example —<\/p>\n

I like ugly cars, so you shouldn’t be surprised that I owned am orange Pontiac Aztek. \u00a0Yes, it was ugly and it got amazing gas mileage, had tons of room — and people knew it was me! \u00a0Of course, it has the dubious distinction of consistently being on every single worst cars<\/a> list created.<\/p>\n

I live in Cleveland — do I need to go on here? \u00a0For some reason, people hate Cleveland<\/a> — even Clevelanders hate Cleveland. \u00a0And in 2012, Reuters rated it the worst city.. \u00a0Well, at least I can say I’m from Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n

I went to Penn State. \u00a0Since I’m from Pennsylvania, it wasn’t anything special to go to Penn State, I mean half the state goes to Penn State. \u00a0But when I got out into the world, I realized Penn State had a great reputation academically and of course there’s that sports thing. \u00a0But lately, they’ve decimated a brand that it’s taken decades to build. \u00a0So these days it’s rated number 7 on the Princeton Review’s Top Party Schools List.<\/a><\/p>\n

Well, I’ve had enough — I’m thinking that I’m going to create my very own “Best of” or “Top \u00a010” list! \u00a0It’s actually not as hard as you think — and when I tell you how, you’re going to wonder why you haven’t done it sooner.<\/p>\n

One of the great things about compiling a “best of” list is that you get to name your methodology. \u00a0Of course, you can create a list based on secondary data such as number of universities, the arts, etc. This is what they use for picking “most livable cities” (gloating, Pittsburgh has been picked most livable city more than once! \u00a0At least I’m on one top list).<\/p>\n

You can also use a survey to collect votes and come out with a “Top” or “Best of” list.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Pick a topic: \u00a0Now you’re going to want to pick a category topic that a lot of people have opinions on; cars, cities, sports teams, laptops, smart phones, etc. \u00a0Of course, you can pick just about anything that you want to be perceived as an expert it.<\/li>\n
  2. Identify the criteria you want to measure:<\/strong> \u00a0Your next step is to pick categories that you’d like to base your results on. \u00a0If you’re doing a survey, you’ll want to pick more subjective criteria such as “traffic” or “fun things to do” or “nice people”. \u00a0In fact, if you’re not sure which criteria to use, you can do a survey to collect that information. \u00a0Keep your criteria list short — no ore than 5. \u00a0This will keep you from going insane.<\/li>\n
  3. Create a list of names of the thing you want to rank;<\/strong> cities, cars, computers, etc. \u00a0It doesn’t have to be comprehensive, but it should be fairly extensive. \u00a0You can define your criteria for creating the list such as “Cars manufactured between 2000 – 2012”.<\/li>\n
  4. Create your survey in QuestionPro.<\/strong> \u00a0Start your survey with an explanation of your list. \u00a0Then create a multiple choice question (select multiple answers) that list your cities and a follow-up matrix question that lists your attributes and ratings. \u00a0Use the branching <\/a>and loop function that will allow people to pick multiple cities and then rate them on the attributes. \u00a0I’ve created a sample here:\u00a0https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/t\/AS9BZOEQ2.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
