

{"id":7115,"date":"2013-04-24T06:00:29","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T13:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/?p=7115"},"modified":"2013-04-24T06:00:29","modified_gmt":"2013-04-24T13:00:29","slug":"are-you-too-close-to-the-situation-to-make-a-good-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/are-you-too-close-to-the-situation-to-make-a-good-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Are You Too Close to the Situation to Make a Good Decision?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last couple of weeks, I&#8217;ve been writing about Chip and Dan Heath&#8217;s new book\u00a0<em>Decisive. \u00a0<\/em>We started the series off by understanding how important it is to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/pzzgH-1QD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expand your options<\/a> so that you consider more than just your gut. \u00a0In the next article of the series, we talked about how to <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/pzzgH-1QG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">experiment<\/a> with your options to try them on for size.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we&#8217;re going to talk about getting some distance from the emotional components of your decisions.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/mirror-on-face.png\" alt=\"Mirror on face\" width=\"226\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>What would my successor do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his presentation, Heath talked about the executives from Intel during the time they were trying to decide on whether or not to make deep investments in the microprocessor business. \u00a0They struggled with whether or not they should leave their legacy memory products behind and go full throttle into microprocessors.<\/p>\n<p>At one point the CEO asked &#8212; &#8220;What would our successors do?&#8221; \u00a0If they brought a new set of executives in, who didn&#8217;t have the emotional connection to the memory business, what would they do? \u00a0Just bringing a little distance between themselves and the decision really helped them gain perspective and get into microprocessors. \u00a0It certainly paid off.<\/p>\n<div>Short term emotion is the villian. \u00a0If you can find a way to keep that emotion in a box, you can find a way to get out of the box. \u00a0Another way to think about it is to ask yourself &#8220;What would I tell my best friend to do?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>What opens up when you focus on your priorities<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One of the most valuable and practical decision-making strategies and tips came during this section of Heath&#8217;s presentation. \u00a0He told the story of \u00a0Navy Captain Michael Abrashoff, who literally transformed the crew of the USS Benfold, a guided missile destroyer. \u00a0He did it by talking to everyone on the ship. \u00a0He learned about their histories and motivations and wanted to hear their opinions about the Benfold; what do you like most, what would you change if you could?<\/div>\n<p>Based on those interviews, he created two lists; a mission critical list and a\u00a0nuisance\u00a0list &#8212; the dreary repetitive stuff that had to be done, but no one wanted to do. \u00a0Worse yet, it kept them from doing mission critical tasks.<\/p>\n<p>His goal was to eliminate as many items from the nuisance list as humanly possible. \u00a0Items on this list included painting the ship and replacing certain ferrous metal bolts. \u00a0The crew had suggestions and ideas and Abrashoff supported them in implementing them. \u00a0The result was nothing short of astounding. \u00a0When the crew was scheduled for a routing 6 month training exercise, the sailors were so far ahead of the curve that they passed the final in the first week. \u00a0Not only that, but they earned \u00a0higher scores than any other ship.<\/p>\n<p>What can you stop doing to carve out time for your priorities. \u00a0Every year we take on things we want to do. \u00a0We never match those things with an idea of what we&#8217;re goingto give up so that we can carve out time forthe things that are important. \u00a0What are your bolts.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last couple of weeks, I&#8217;ve been writing about Chip and Dan Heath&#8217;s new book\u00a0Decisive. \u00a0We started the series [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":128,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[180],"tags":[284],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Are You Too Close to the Situation to Make a Good Decision?
