

{"id":9838,"date":"2014-07-10T06:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-07-10T13:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/?p=9838"},"modified":"2023-08-17T06:00:02","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T06:00:02","slug":"killer-survey-tip-how-to-screen-out-respondents-without-hurting-their-feelings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/killer-survey-tip-how-to-screen-out-respondents-without-hurting-their-feelings\/","title":{"rendered":"Killer Survey Tip: How to Screen Out Respondents Without Hurting Their Feelings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>&#8220;Why do I always get screened out of surveys?&#8221; &nbsp;Given how difficult it is to actually get targeted respondents, I thought this was a provocative question. &nbsp;Apparently there are folks who actually get their feelings hurt for being screened out and will bail on your survey. &nbsp;Hmmmm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/iStock_000009669723XSmall-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Thinking Outside The Box\" class=\"wp-image-9839\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s just get one thing out into the open &#8212; I am NOT a professional market researcher. &nbsp;I&#8217;m a marketing expert who uses market research. &nbsp;And that means that there is a tremendous amount I don&#8217;t know about the intricacies of research, sampling and such. &nbsp;So, when I run into some info that strikes me as a good idea, I make the assumption that you might be interested too. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This week, while trolling the internet for some interesting content to share I ran into an article over at Peanut Labs about the practice of <a href=\"http:\/\/web.peanutlabs.com\/why-did-you-screen-me-out-after-i-told-you-my-age\/\">screening out participants<\/a> from surveys. &nbsp;They did some research on which part of the survey respondents disliked most and discovered that fully 24% HATED being screened out from a survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think I get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reluctantly, you make the decision to click and take a survey, answer a few questions, who knows, maybe invest something like five or ten minutes then get screened out. &nbsp;I can imagine that it leaves you feeling like you&#8217;ve wasted your time &#8212; and when you have so little of it and you&#8217;ve just invested some in a &#8220;distraction&#8221; &#8212; you might get a little testy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have this issue? &nbsp;Well, you might not know that you have this issue, but you can at least expect that fully more than 20% of your respondents are ticked off and may NOT take your next survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t<div class=\"banner-section wf-section\" lang=\"\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"right-column-container\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"bannerbg white\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"h1-2\">Create memorable experiences based on real-time data, insights and advanced analysis.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<a href=\"#userliteForm\" data-toggle=\"modal\" class=\"button w-button\">Request Demo<\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"userlite-modal modal fade\" id=\"userliteForm\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"dialog\" style=\"display: none;\">\n\t\t<div class=\"modal-dialog\" role=\"document\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-content\" role=\"document\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"modal-header\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" class=\"close\" data-dismiss=\"modal\" aria-label=\"Close\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i class=\"material-icons\">close<\/i>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"contact-us-form-wrapper contact-box\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"userlite-form-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/userlite-form-blog-en.html?product=Surveys&amp;referralurl=https:\/\/www.questionpro.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9838&amp;lang=en&amp;cat=survey-software\" style=\"display: block;\" ><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"demo-form-wrapper success-message-div\" style=\"display:none\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message-para\"><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to make your respondents feel better<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Undaunted, the Peanut Labs folks have come up with a solution. &nbsp;We already tell our respondents that we won&#8217;t use their demographic information for anything other than analysis, why not tell them WHY they may get screened out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s how they did it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p id=\"mf66\"><em>At the end of the survey, after we asked about demographics, we explained to responders why they might screen out of surveys. Then, we asked them \u201cIs there anything else you would like to share with us, whether about the topic of this survey or the survey itself?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"mf67\"><em>A number of responders appreciated this extra piece of information so much that they specifically told us so:<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"mf68\">\n<li> <em>\u201cit is nice to know that you care about the people that take your surveys and are interested in feedback.\u201d<\/em> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <em>\u201cok\u00a0 you answered my last question right here about why sometimes I\u2019m not chosen thank you\u201d<\/em> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <em>\u201cThe last part of this survey concerning screening out was informative.\u201d<\/em> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <em>\u201cYOU ANSWERED THEM IN THE Q&amp;A\u201d<\/em> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting completed responses from a qualified sample is hard enough &#8212; I think this little tip is easy enough to do and can possibly increase your
