Why do you think you were laid off?
|07/22/2020||74727760||I've been laid off 2X and found another job to avoid a third layoff. The first time was because a pharma bought all the other pharmas in the state where I lived. They had no choice but to RIF because they had so much duplication from all the mergers. The second time was a role fit. The last time was a "working for the sales group, but with no personal revenue quota/goal" situation. I didn't want my boss to be in a position to lay me off, so I found another job.|
|07/21/2020||74645224||they 'shipped' my job to India along with the majority of the development of the project. Also Silicon Valley writers are expensive so they are going to hire cheaper writers most of whom don't have the experience or the language skills.|
|07/17/2020||74224881||Pure cost cutting. The division we worked in was being reorganized, with some products being cut, and absorbed into another division. The new division already had a writing team and it was felt they could handle the additional workload without keeping the old writers around.|
|07/12/2020||73571111||There were only two of us. My fellow writer had worked in QA before moving to documentation and had been with the company longer. He was the better choice to keep.|
|07/09/2020||73281095||In one case I was on an editorial and production team that supported tech writers, and our manager thought that the "production side of what we do will save us," but she was wrong. They kept the one guy who was managing the document library and laid off the rest of us. Also, she didn't actively advocate for us, as she realized after the lay-off. She had hubris about the perception of our value. The second time, an entire product line was discontinued, and everyone in that department was laid off.|
|07/08/2020||73227050||I was laid off because I was a poor fit for the position and the company.|
|07/08/2020||73195386||I've been laid off more than once. At one company I worked at, I got a new tech pubs manager (the previous manager moved departments and an existing tech writer got promoted to fill the vacancy), and this new manager told me I was too young (I was 26) and too inexperienced (I had 2 years) to be holding a senior technical writing role making the money that I was making, and he wasn't happy with the previous manager's decision to hire me. After he said this he fired me, as I expected. Shortly after I left the company, I found out that the other seven tech writers (they were all older than me) received poor performance reviews and were fired too. They speculated that the manager probably had some sort of ulterior motive and left it as that. I got the sense that nobody missed their jobs. But what I got from this experience was that my salary must match my age and proven experience, not my potential.|
|07/08/2020||73197580||Economic: during the 2008-2009 recession, my company laid off all contractors, and I was only contracting at the time.|
|07/06/2020||73067409||Budget cuts to lower l-t costs of paying a perm. employee. Also perception of a writer as someone that can be easily replaceable.|
|07/06/2020||73053192||They laid off the two newest writers. I don't think they really knew if we were any good or not. In fact, I kind of hope they didn't know because they kept a couple of lousy writers (in my opinion at least), and I'd hate to think the company thought they were the better writers.|
