Dear Respondent

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

According to Brown et al. (2005, p.120), in order for leaders to be perceived as ethical leaders and to influence ethical conduct of subordinates, they must engage in behaviour that is normatively appropriate (open and honest) and be motivated by altruism (treating employees fairly and consistently). However what is critical in the evaluation of the leader is whether their interaction with the group and the reward and punishment of behavior, is perceived as being fair and whether the rules governing these decisions are consistently applied.

Your participation in this research is voluntary. You may choose not to participate. If you decide to participate in this research survey, you may withdraw at any time. Your responses will be confidential and we do not collect identifying information such as your name and email address. To help protect your confidentiality, the survey does not contain information that will personally identify you. The results of this study will be used for scholarly purposes only.

The NMMU ethical protocols have been followed in the design and administration of the survey. However, if you have any questions or require further information about the project, please contact Paul Poisat (041 – 5043750).

SURVEY INSTRUCTIONS

Please read all the questions carefully and answer them the best you can. With the multiple answer questions, please select an answer that best reflects your opinion. While some questions may appear to be asking about the same thing, there are subtle differences that allow us to develop a nuanced understanding of differences in work-related attitudes and behaviours. Please answer the questions in relation to your principal place of employment.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
