Dear Automotive Thought Leader,

As a part of our MBA studies at Great Lakes Institute of management – Chennai , we are conducting this study to explore the expected trends of Aluminium applications in Indian automobile.

Steel has been the material of choice for many automotive components since the dawn of the automotive age; however, it is well established now that a change to lightweight intensive materials would bring significant environmental and economic benefits. The benefits of using the light weight materials have led to the generation of many applications of light weight automotive materials such as Aluminum, Magnesium and composites.

This study is focused on understanding the current usage of aluminum in high volume automobile models in Indian Market, and to get your opinion on the future technologies. Based on the global trends on Aluminium applications in cars, the potential applications of Aluminium in Indian automotive industry are proposed, you are requested to evaluate these proposals based on their attractiveness for implementation in near future.

We wish to assure you that the information shared by you would be kept confidential. Also, we are open to sharing the summarized findings and insights gained by this study with you.

1)The manufacturers of mass produced vehicles which are manufactured in India are under pressure to reduce the weight of the vehicles in following categories
Yes No Not aware
Category A - upto 5 Lakh
Category B – 5 to 10 Lakh
Category C – 10 -20 Lakh

2)Rate the following options for automotive light weighting on 100 point scale based on the attractiveness of the option in the next 3-5 years. { the sum of points given to following should be 100}.
Use of aluminium
Use of magnesium
Use of High strength steel.
Use of polymer /composites.

3)For past 10 years Indian automobile industry has observed a constant growth of Aluminium usage and this trend is expected to grow in the years to come.

Yes

No

Not sure

In case the response for the above question is no please given some insights why do you think so.

4)The penetration of Wrought Aluminium applications (extrusions, sheets, forgings) in Indian automotive is less as compared to that in EU, NA and Japan.
Listed below are some of the probable reasons, please rate them on the 100 point (constant sum) scale. While distributing the 100 points , give maximum to the most probable reason according to you.
High cost impact
Fluctuations in aluminium prices.
Non availability of design know-how.
Lack of Manufacturing know how ( forming , joining , painting etc )
Crash management with Al design ( will improve or reduce crash performance )
Unavailability of automotive Material grades and materials properties.
Better alternatives to light weighting such as High strength steels.
Challenges in Managing the supply chain. (New vendor development / phasing out the exiting steel vendor and inventory / long term contracts with existing vendors).

5)In the product portfolio of your company what is the weight of aluminium per vehicle. (Please ignore the question , if your company is not in a particular category ) in case of more than one product in category , please use the vehicle model with highest Aluminium content by weight .
Category A - upto 5 Lakh
Category B – 5 to 10 Lakh
Category C – 10 -20 Lakh

6)Based on your work experience in automotive systems, please choose the options from following that is/are in line with your knowledge and expertise within automotive domain.

I have worked primarily on transmission / Engine parts

I have worked primarily on body system which include

I have worked on chassis and suspension domains
