Participant Information Sheet.
You are being invited to take part in a research study as part of an undergraduate dissertation project, for a BSc qualification, which aims to study how people express and distinguish their emotions. It is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what the research will involve before deciding upon participation. It is essential that you read and fully understand the following information.

Title of project.
To identify methods of expression and identification of emotion in a nonclinical population.

Introduction and aim of the research.
This project is investigating personality and emotional identity in a nonclinical population; it aims to identify a link between emotional states and personality characteristics. This research is being conducted as there is recent evidence that particular emotional coping strategies are associated to individual personality types. This project will investigate if there are any associations within a healthy population.

Who will conduct the research?
The research will be carried out by Christina Newman (student) and Dr Dougal Hare, from the School of Psychological Sciences of The University of Manchester.

Where will the research be conducted?
The research will be carried out at the University of Manchester using online questionnaires.

Why have I been chosen?
You have been selected because you are a nonclincal member of the general population and have expressed an interest in taking part.

What would I be asked to do if I took part?
The study will take approximately 25 minutes, you will be asked to read the information sheet and electronically sign the consent form. You will then proceed to answer the online battery of tests.

What happens to the data collected and how is confidentiality maintained?
During the data analysis participants will be assigned a number to maintain anonymity. Any personal details obtained for correspondence, which may lead to patient identification, will be kept in a locked file on the University of Manchester Campus.

What happens if I do not want to take part or change my mind?
Participation is voluntary and if at any point you no longer wish to participate then you are free to withdraw with no reason required and no detriment to yourself.

Will I be reimbursed for my participation? 
There will be no reimbursement for completing this study but the data will go towards a final year dissertation project. 

What if something goes wrong?
This is highly unlikely to occur, but if any help or advice is needed participants should contact the researcher, whose details are given below. All participants are insured under the University insurance policy.

Can I complain?
If you wish to make a formal complaint about the conduct of the research you should contact the Head of the Research Office, Christie Building, University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL.
