DESCRIPTION OF THE RESEARCH
You are invited to participate in a research study about the experience of listening to speakers tell stories. You have been asked to participate because you are between 18-30 years of age, have normal hearing, and are currently enrolled in at least one class in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at Illinois State University. The purpose of the research is to determine how familiarity with different celebrity media voices may interact with one's listening experience. You will participate in this research using a computer with internet access, in the location of your choosing.

WHAT WILL MY PARTICIPATION INVOLVE?
If you decide to participate in this research you will be asked to answer a variety of questions via an internet survey including those about your mood and your familiarity with a variety of celebrities. You will also listen to two to five speakers reading children's stories. After listening to each, you will be asked a variety of questions concerning your mood and experience of listening to each speaker tell the story. It is estimated that it should take you approximately 25 minutes or less to complete this survey.

ARE THERE ANY RISKS TO ME?
There is a risk of a possible breach of confidentiality due to data security breaches or oversights.

ARE THERE ANY BENEFITS TO ME?
We don't expect any direct benefits to you from participation in this study, other than being awarded three points of extra credit to one of your courses, upon survey completion.

WILL I BE COMPENSATED FOR MY PARTICIPATION?
You will receive 3 extra credit points from the communication sciences and disorders class, from which you were recruited, for completion of the survey.

HOW WILL MY CONFIDENTIALITY BE PROTECTED?
While there will probably be publications as a result of this study, your name will not be used. Only group characteristics will be published. Your responses will remain anonymous and will be accessed only by the principal investigators, Lisa Vinney and Cynthia Vinney, from a password-protected account. Your identifying information will only be accessible through a separate SignUpGenius.com account, to which you will be automatically redirected at the end of your participation in the survey. Thus, your identifying information will not be directly linked to your survey measure, but a record of survey completion will be kept via SignUpGenius.com. Instructors of the classes from which you were recruited will not have access to your survey measures, but will receive an email that you participated. Your confidentiality will be kept to the degree permitted by the technology used. The security of data transmitted over the Internet cannot be guaranteed as all Internet-based communications, even the most secured, have the possibility of being intercepted. The collection of these data is not expected to present any greater risk than you would encounter in everyday life when sending and/or receiving information over the Internet.

You may ask any questions about the research at any time. If you choose to participate in the study by filling out the survey measure, you may stop participating in it at any time by clicking out of the survey. Suspending participation in the survey will have no effect on your performance in the class from which you were recruited, although only individuals who complete the survey measure in its entirety will receive extra credit.

We are interested in your reactions to a speaker and his/her voice. In the following you will listen to stories told by different speakers and you will be asked about your listening experience.

Most questions are answered on 5 or 7-point scales with endpoints labeled as indicated for each set of items.
