ABOUT THE STUDY:
This study is about how language changes over time. The thesis is being written by Melissa Jaen. She is a student in the Linguistics Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Northeastern Illinois University. It was written under the guidance of Dr. Lewis Gebhardt.

PROCEDURES INVOLVED IN THIS STUDY:
During this study you’ll first be asked to answer some general questions about yourself. Then you’ll be asked to listen to twenty pairs of recordings in Korean. You’ll be asked to identify what type of speech each phrase is. All recordings will be in Korean. The survey will be given to at least 20 native Korean speakers and at least 20 non-Korean speakers. The survey should take about 20 minutes.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS:
You will not benefit from being in the study, but the information you give will help the researchers understand how sounds are important in language. It will help us understand how it may carry meaning. It will help us see what intonation tells us about the evolution of language. It will help us see what possible systems might have evolved into languages.

Your participation is voluntary. You may quit at any time. Refusal to participate or deciding to stop won’t result in a penalty to you. Also, if necessary, the investigator may choose to end participation at any time. CONFIDENTIALITY: Your privacy will be protected. This study will be confidential. Data will be collected through the use of QuestionPro Surveys. From there, your survey will be stored on a secure, password protected Google Drive database for three years after the end of the study. After three years, the responses will be saved on a password-protected flash drive, and locked in a cabinet in Melissa Jaen’s residence. Melissa Jaen will be the only person who sees the data.
