Multiple choice question types (closed-ended)

Multiple choice closed-ended questions allow respondents to choose one or more answers from a given list of answer options. You can define the answer options of your own choice or you can use a pre-existing set of dichotomous answers, such as yes/no, true/false, or ranking scale response options. It also allows you to add an "other" option where the respondents can fill in their own answer choice. You can also add the NA (not applicable) option.

1. Multiple choice closed-ended questions are more easily analyzed. Every answer can be given a number or value so that a statistical interpretation can be assessed. Closed-ended questions are also better suited for computer analysis. If open-ended questions are analyzed quantitatively, the qualitative information is reduced to coding and answers tend to lose some of their initial meaning. Because of the simplicity of closed-ended questions, this kind of loss is avoided.
2. Multiple choice closed-ended questions can be more specific, thus more likely to communicate similar meanings. Because open-ended questions allow respondents to use their own words, it is difficult to compare the meanings of the responses.
3. In large-scale surveys, closed-ended questions take less time from the interviewer, the participant and the researcher, and so are a less expensive survey method. The response rate is higher with surveys that use closed-ended questions than with those that use open-ended questions.

1. Radio buttons: A radio button or option button is a type of graphical user interface element that allows the respondents to choose only one option from a predefined set of options.
2. Check boxes: A check box (checkbox, tickbox, or tick box) is a graphical user interface element (widget) that permits the respondents to make multiple selections from a number of options.
3. Drop-down: A drop-down list is a user interface control GUI element, similar to a list box, which allows the respondents to choose one value from a list. When a drop-down list is inactive, it displays a single value. When activated, it displays (drops down) a list of values, from which the respondents may select one.
4. Select list: A select list box is a GUI widget that allows the user to select one or more items from a list contained within a static, multiple line text box. The respondent can click inside the box on an item to select it, sometimes in combination with the shift key or Control key in order to make multiple selections.

Once you add questions to a survey, by default, the validation option is turned off. If the validation option is disabled, respondents can continue with the survey without answering the question. By enabling the validation option, you can see a drop-down with options - force response and request response.

Force response option makes a question mandatory.

When you select the Request response option, the respondent gets a pop-up in case a question is not answered, requesting to answer the question or continue the survey without answering.

Custom validation messages: You can set a customized validation message as well.

Select at most/exactly/at least: You can put validation on the number of answer options that a respondent must select before proceeding to the next question. For example, if you want the respondent to select a minimum of 3 answer options, then choose select at least from the drop-down and set the value as 3.
