A traditional college student is one who enrolls in college immediately after graduation from high school, pursues college studies on a continuous full-time basis at least during the fall and spring semesters, and completes a bachelor’s degree program at the age of 22 or 23. Traditional students are also typically financially dependant on others, do not have children, consider their college career to be their primary responsibility, and are employed only on a parttime basis if at all during the academic year.

A non-traditional college student is one who does not enrolls in college immediately after graduation from high school, and may pursues college studies on a part-time basis with several interruptions in their college enrollment, and completes a bachelor’s degree program usually over the age of 25.  Non-traditional students are also typically financially independant and may have other responsibilities, such as family or work, other than their college career.

The 90-10 Rule is a federal law barring for-profit colleges from receiving more than 90% of their revenues from Department of Education Title IV federal student aid, which includes student loans and grants. However, GI Bill funds and Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance are currently exlcuded from the 90% side and is counted as private dollars on the 10% side.
