Dear Town of Chevy Chase Resident:

In October 2012, the town council of the Town of Chevy Chase passed a resolution to pursue Sustainable Maryland Certified (SMC), a voluntary certification program for municipalities in Maryland who want to go green, control costs and save money, and take steps to sustain their quality of life over the long term. The Climate and Environment Committee, with assistance from Town staff, will be managing the Town’s SMC certification. The program encompasses a range of issues including climate change, energy use and generation, air and water pollution, land use and green buildings, equity, local economies, health, transportation, and more. Achieving SMC certification will distinguish the Town as a leader, provide a competitive edge for future grants, give the Town access to the program’s tools and resources, and enable us to benchmark our performance against similar communities.

One of the first actions required in the program is this survey to assess and prioritize the desires of the community regarding our local environment. Results from the survey will help as we develop a Green Action Plan, which will outline three years of proposed steps toward maintaining and improving our Town’s quality of life and establish an agenda for the Climate and Environment Committee.

Some of the questions on the survey will also help us assess the Town’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction progress. The Town committed to a target of a 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012, when it signed the U.S. Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement in 2006.

This survey is voluntary and all questions are optional. Although there are only seven questions in total, we hope you will take the time to give us thoughtful answers and add additional comments. You can go back and change earlier questions but your answers will not be saved if you close the program before completing and submitting the survey.

If you have any questions, please contact the committee’s SMC liaison Julia Craighill, [email protected] or 301 656 8445.

Thank you so much for your help.
