FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS SURVEY

BRITISH FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS SURVEY

Hello,

Thank you for taking time to answer this survey regarding the UK press foreign correspondents.

The research aims to identify correspondents’ professional values, working routines and their relationship with newsdesks back in the UK. It also attempts to find out how much autonomy is given to foreign correspondents in terms of selecting stories and emphasizing particular story angle.

If you are retired or no longer work as a foreign correspondent, please answer the questions retrospectively.

An assessment of the following issues and key challenges that foreign correspondents face will be made in the context of previous research findings.

The survey is primarily based on research conducted by Lars Willnat and David Weaver (2003) in the US. However, a number of new questions have been added to emphasize the main purpose of this study, which is establishing whether UK foreign correspondents enjoy more autonomy than their colleagues working and living in the UK.

This survey asks closed and open questions giving you a space for expressing your opinion and hopefully engaging with this study.

It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

Although foreign correspondents, their backgrounds and many aspects of their work, have been the subject of a number of studies in the US. This is still a relatively undiscovered area of media studies in the UK with only a few published works available. Also, it must be noted, that major research in the UK needs updating as it was conducted in 1960s and 70s.

Therefore, it is very important for me, and my fellow students to learn your views. You will help us to understand better what it means to be a foreign correspondent and what challenges you face, but also you will contribute to developing currently limited research in the area.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported in the dissertation anonymously. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, please contact me on (+44) 0793 222 00 35 or by email at the email address specified below.

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.
