Tyne and Wear

border

This follow-up survey focuses on Sunderland, Newcastle, and locations between these two cities. The survey is probably going to be of particular interest to people from Tyne and Wear, but even if you aren't from this part of the region, or you've never lived there, I’d appreciate your opinions, views, anecdotes, and so on.

The survey is in two parts. The first part asks a few questions about you (gender, age etc.). The main part of the survey is very open – it gives you the chance to comment (at length if you want) on where you think the ‘border’ between Newcastle and Sunderland lies (if you think there is one). It also asks you to outline what you think are the differences in accent/dialect between Sunderland and Newcastle. Finally, it asks you your views on ‘rivalry’ between the two cities.

Remember – there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers. I just want to know what you think. Because this survey involves thought and reflection, you might want to set aside 20 minutes or so to complete it.

Any information you supply will remain confidential. If you have questions about the survey or the procedures, please feel free to contact me by email at the address below.

Thank you very much for your time and support. Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.

Are you male or female?
Your age on 1st September 2008
What is your occupation? (If you are retired, put your main job in your working life; if you are a student at school or college, put 'student'.)
What do you consider to be your 'home town'? It's probably the place you grew up in. It's also probably the answer you give when someone from the North East of England asks you 'Where are you from?'
What is the postcode of the house in the place you grew up in/consider as your home town? If you don't know the postcode, put in as much detail as you can. For example, 'Horsley Hill, South Shields' (not just 'South Shields').
If you had to choose, which city would you say you felt emotionally and personally closer to?
What are the reasons for your choice in the previous question?
The space below is for you to put down your ideas about the 'border'/'boundary' between Newcastle and Sunderland. Do you think there is one? If so, where does Newcastle influence end and Sunderland influence begin? Are there any landmarks which for you mark the boundary? Rivers? Hills? Roads? Particular buildings? A point on the coast? And are there places which you feel are neither Sunderland nor Newcastle, but a bit of both? Or are there places between Newcastle and Sunderland with their own identities, separate from Newcastle or Sunderland? Does accent/dialect have any relationship to this border?
What are the differences between people from Sunderland and Newcastle in the way they speak? Think about the way words are pronounced and distinctive words people use (I’d like to collect as many examples as I can). And what about places in between Sunderland and Newcastle – are there distinctive ways of speaking here?
In the previous question, you thought about the differences between people from Sunderland and Newcastle in the way they speak. Do you think there has been any change over time? Do people speak the same now as they did in the past?
Some people say that there is rivalry between the people of Sunderland and Newcastle. Do you think this is the case? If so, why do you think this rivalry exists?
If there's anything you'd like to add which isn't covered in the previous questions, please write it below.
If you would like to be considered for further research, please make sure the email address I used to send you this survey is the best one. If it is, do nothing; if you wish to change your address (perhaps because you are leaving university, or you've changed your account), write your new one in the box below. Alternatively, if you do not want me to contact you again, write NO in the box and I will remove you from my list of contacts.
