Research Project Title: Mentoring As a Successful Practice Tool for Information Systems Project Management
A State of Play Survey - Adoption & Application of Mentoring Practices within the Context Of IS Project Management Process Cycle
Information Systems is a capital investment. It is an instrument of economic change. IS project management is a major and critical business challenge. The IS project management field is dynamic and IS project success is of vital importance. We would like to learn from your experiences and obtain a better understanding of IS project management practices.
You are part of a selected sample asked to assist with this survey, and we appreciate your participation. Your responses will be treated as confidential. This survey will take about 20 minutes for you to complete. In return you will be able to use the results of this survey to benchmark project management practice within your organisation.

To help with you answer this survey, we have defined some of the terms that we use in it:
Information Systems (IS) : A computerised system that It is a used to satisfy the information needs of an organisation. It may be a combination of computer hardware, networking & communication technologies and systems & application software which are designed to handle information of one or more business processes.
IS Project Manager : The project leader in project leadership role who is normally vested with formal authority to guide, monitor and direct project resources to achieve the project objectives within agreed time, cost and performance criteria.
IS Project Management : It is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.
Project Management Process Cycle Initiating : Defines and authorizes the project phase; Planning : Defines and refines objectives, and plans the course of action required to attain the objectives and scope that the project was undertaken to address; Executing : Integrates people and other resources to carry out the project management plan for the project; Monitoring and Controlling : Regularly measures and monitors progress to identify variances from the project management plan so that corrective action can be taken when necessary to meet project objectives; Closing : Formalises acceptance of the project, service or results and brings the project phase to an orderly end.
Mentoring : It is generally the relationship of that of a more experienced individual known as a mentor and a less experienced individual, called a mentee. It is considered as a form of professional learning where the mentee learn through observing, doing, commenting and questioning.
IS Project Mentor Or Mentor : The mentor is the person (or persons) who acts as a guide to the IS project manager for the sole purpose of increasing the chances of success of the IS project.

During the period of July 2009 to December 2009, we will be conducting a series of studies of IS project management in MSC status companies in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Through this we will gain an in-depth understanding of the various aspect of the adoption and application of the IS project mentoring process within the IS project management process cycle, in order to provide some guidance to industry on achieving more positive IS project outcomes.
