ironman-distance triathlon training volume survey

ironman test survey

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this
research project.

After reviewing this introduction, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the button to advance to the first set of survey questions.

The study is investigating the quantity of training performed by athletes training for an ironman-distance triathlon.
For the purposes of this survey, an ironman-distance race is one with the same distances as the official "Ironman" branded races, with distances of a 3.8 km (2.4 miles) swim, a 180 km (112 miles) bike, and a 42.2 km (26.2 miles) run.

Training data for one season will be collected for any athlete that has started an
ironman-distance triathlon in the past 5 years (2000 - current). A review and summary of all collected data, sorted by gender and race category, will be available to all survey participants. Please note that all gathered data (male, female, elite and non-elite) will be summarized and listed in the survey result section of this site: http://www.trisurvey.net. The final graduate study report will only include data from non-elite male triathletes that started an ironman-distance triathlon between January 2000 and mid-November 2004.

Sections of the survey will gather information on:

  • athlete's characteristics

  • training performance

  • race performance

When providing information, data or results, please:

  • use your training logbook (if available) to complete the survey

  • be as accurate as possible

  • consider a year (the annual period of time) to end with the start of your most recent ironman-distance race, and to start 12 months prior to that race.

Completing the survey will take approximately 30 minutes.

Click Here to preview the survey - you may gather the needed training data prior to taking the survey by reviewing this preview

You may stop at some points during the survey, save your work, and return to the survey at a later time. NOTE - ONLY STOP AND SAVE ONCE A PAGE IS COMPLETED - YOU CANNOT GO BACKWARDS IN THE SURVEY. ONCE YOU SAVE AND LEAVE, THE SURVEY PICKS UP FROM THAT POINT FORWARD.

Your participation in this study is voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks
associated with this project. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any
questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. Your survey responses will be strictly
confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate.
Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. Only Mathew Luebbers (the
survey author) and three faculty members from the United States Sports Academy (the study oversight committee)
will have access to your individual responses.

If you wish to supply your name or
your e-mail address to assist with any follow-up questions you may do so, but
that information is not required. If you have questions at any time about the
survey or the procedures, you may contact Mathew Luebbers at 011-81-098-930-4222
or by email at [email protected]

The survey results will be available in February 2005. As a survey participant, you are entitled to review the results. For results, access the Tri Survey website at http://www.trisurvey.net after January 2005.

How many weeks away from your first ironman-distance race of the season do you begin training specifically for that race?
Does your training move from a general emphasis to a more ironman-distance emphasis?
Does your training include recovery periods of more than 2 consecutive days on a regular basis? There may still be training sessions during these days or phases, but the general emphasis is recovery or regeneration.

OPTIONAL - If you have any additional information on how you measure the quantity of the training you perform for swimming, cycling, and running:
For your training in the year that ended with your most recent ironman-distance race start, what was (or is) your total annual volume (how many total hours of training did you perform in that single year)?
For your most recent training year that ended with your most recent ironman-distance triathlon start, please enter your annual (one year total) and single-longest-workout (within that one year) details. Please enter both duration and distance values if known. You might complete this "longest" workout more than once in a training period, but you do not complete any workouts longer than this "longest" workout. Other is any workout that does not include swimming, cycling, or running; please describe what these other types of workouts are in the additional information area.

Total Annual Distance for all workouts
Please enter an mi for miles, ya for yards, km for kilometers, or me for meters

Additional Information
For the data just entered, please elaborate on the hours of training by type by calendar month. Please enter the months by number, January = 1, February = 2, etc. Please round up to whole hours (for example, 250 and 1/2 hours would be 251 hours). The last column should be the month during which you started your most recent ironman-distance race
