Thanks for responding to my email, any comments you make will be of great help in this project.
CNC routers have the benefit of accuracy and repeatability, but require that the component or blank is clamped to the machine bed. This limits the type of work that can be done to the physical size of the machine. Hand held routers are very flexible in their use and can be positioned onto an assembly where they can be used freehand or guided by a template jig. However, for accurate work a jig is required, and each application requires its own jig, as the jig/template cannot be modified. The concept of the tool that I am developing takes both these ideas and combines them in a single tool that can be securely fixed, non destructively, to the surface face of a component or large assembly. The tool is then set to cut out a profile according to the pattern programmed into the tools computer memory. This allows accurate repeatable cutting operations of complex shapes to be carried out on components or assemblies that could not be positioned on a conventional CNC machine table.
Some examples of the potential use of the tool are:
*The cutting of profiles to accept boss plates on air ducting assemblies on site. *The cutting of inlay patterns on large tabletops. *Cutting out accurate hole profiles in large glass fibre mouldings. *Engraving lettering or images onto panels already fixed on site. Eg, plastic shop front facias.
