Viola for Violinists

Dear Violist:

My name is Aaron Au. I am a violist at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada where I am currently pursuing a doctoral degree in string performance and pedagogy. The following survey has been designed to help understand and highlight the differences between playing the violin and viola. It will also examine the state of viola pedagogy, both past and present. The information collected will be compiled and used in my doctoral thesis, which aims to develop a systematic approach for teaching the viola to violinists.

Section A deals with your training as a violist. Section B deals with your performance and pedagogical experience as they pertain to the viola. Section C collects personal data to place your answers from the previous sections in context. Section D provides an opportunity for a more detailed follow-up in the future.

It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary. There are no foreseeable risks associated with this project. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point. It is very important for us to learn your opinions.

This survey is being conducted in accordance with the guidelines set out in the University of Alberta Standards for the Protection of Human Research Participants. Your survey responses will be stricly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, you may contact Aaron Au by email at the email address specified below.
