CM attitudes towards ME
To all of my dearest Chinese Malaysian friends (CMs),


Many thanks for your co-operation and willingness to take part in my small-scale study on Malaysian English (ME). This questionnaire is distributed to seek your precious help with investigating what attitudes you have towards ME as a non-native variety of English.


Many researchers in this area have described and commented on ME, but more important, are the views of Malaysians themselves. Although there are three major ethnic groups in Malaysia, I am only able to focus on the Chinese group, to find out about attitudes towards ME.


Your kind participation, response and feedback will be hugely beneficial to me in order to enable me to carry out an investigation into the attitudes of Chinese Malaysians (CMs) towards Malaysian English (ME) as a non-native variety of English.


All the information that you provide will be used confidentially and only be used for academic purposes. Your identity will also be kept anonymous.

1. “ME has developed from British English since the period of British colonization.”
2. “ME is different from other non-native varieties of English in terms of phonology (e.g. pronunciation), grammar and lexis (e.g. choice of words).”
3. “ME is not internationally intelligible and is only understood by Malaysians themselves.”
4. “ME is normally spoken with a distinctive Malaysian accent which is easily recognized or identified.” (e.g. “sooreee, I don know”, as in “sorry, I don’t know.”)
5. “ME has lots of grammatical mistakes and is different from native English (such as American, British, etc.) varieties.” (e.g. “Why you give him the pen?”)
6. “ME usually consists of colloquial or slang expressions which are mixed with or switched between Chinese, Malay and other languages.” (e.g. “Let’s go jalan lah!”)
