Perceptions of Law in Every Day Life

Thank You for taking the time to respond to this extremely important survey about perceptions of law in our daily lives.

Please review the Terms & Conditions carefully on the next page, and click the "ACCEPT TERMS" button to continue on to the survey itself, which should take about 5-10 minutes to complete.

i. By filling in this form and submitting it, I agree that my responses and comments may be used as the basis of research intended to be published and disseminated as widely as the researchers who have created this survey (hereinafter, the "Researchers") desire, in their sole discretion and judgment.

ii. I agree to respond to the survey as honestly as possible, to participate to the best of my ability and to consider carefully my responses before selecting from the available options. In the event that I feel offended by any of the survey questions, in whole or in relevant part, I agree to first address my concerns directly to the Researchers by discussing the matter with them before pursuing outside remedies. I further agree to attempt to resolve any and all disputes arising out of my completion of this survey by rock, paper scissor (best two out of three).

iii. These Terms & Conditions shall be governed by, construed and enforced in accordance with, the laws of the State of Texas. In the event that any covenant, condition or other provision herein contained is held to be invalid, void or illegal by any court of competent jurisdiction, the same shall be deemed to be severable from the remainder of these Terms & Conditions and shall in no way affect, impair or invalidate any other covenant, condition or other provision contained. If such condition, covenant or other provision shall be invalid due to its scope or breadth, such covenant, condition or other provision shall be deemed valid to the extent of the scope or breadth permitted by law.

iv. I concur with the sentiment that it is our collective obligation to the social sciences to advance the state of knowledge about the relationship(s), in whole or in relevant part, among legal areas such as tort, property, civil liability, contract and other statutory realms on the one hand and our social identities and other institutional relationships, on the other. Therefore, by way of demonstrating my acceptance of this shared understanding and sentiment, by signaling my consent below, I hereby agree to forego any fee(s), compensation or other remuneration, monetary, or otherwise, otherwise owed and due to me for my participation in this study. I acknowledge and agree that what I gain from my participation in this study is my knowledge of my contribution to the advancement of research in the areas discussed above, in whole or in relevant part, and nothing more.

v. I agree that my participation in this research may be required beyond the completion of this survey and to this end, if the Researchers require my additional assistance in responding to follow-up questions (in their sole discretion), I agree to participate fully in responding to said follow-up questions. My participation shall be limited to responding fully to fifty questions per day for a period of no more than one hundred business days or two hours per day, whichever is greater.

vi. I hereby acknowledge and agree that damages to the Researchers resulting directly and proximately from my breach of any provision of this agreement are difficult to determine. As such, I agree that breach of any provision of this Agreement shall be remedied by payment of liquidated damages of one-hundred dollars. In the event that I fail to cooperate fully with any follow-up research as delineated above, I agree that this rate shall apply on a per diem basis.

vii. Subject to these Terms & Conditions, I hereby generally release the Researchers and their respective agents, affiliates and others acting on their behalf, from any and all causes of action, in law or in equity, I might have against them as a result of my completing this Survey, including arising from these Terms & Conditions.

Imagine that you start a new job with an employer, "Gen-Co." On your first day of work, Gen-Co.'s HR director gives you some forms to sign. One of these forms indicates that in return for being hired, you agree to waive your right to sue Gen-Co. in court, and instead would have to resort to a process called 'arbitration' to resolve any and all disputes that arise.

Please indicate your level of agreement or disagreement with the following three statements based on this scenario:

It is LAWFUL for Gen-Co. to require you to sign this agreement
It is FAIR for Gen-Co. to require you to sign this agreement
If you tried to sue Gen-Co. after signing the agreement, Gen-Co. could force you to go to arbitration to resolve the dispute instead.
If given a form to sign before starting a job, how likely are you to sign it without reading it first?

Arbitration is just as fair as courts for handling employment disputes.
I would sign just about anything that is put in front of me if I needed the job.
It is common for employers to require hourly-paid employees to sign such agreements.
It is common for employers to require professional employees (doctors, lawyers, etc.) to sign such agreements.
