My name is Christopher Nellum, and I am a graduate student at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in the Master of Science in Counseling option in Student Development in Higher Education (SDHE) program. I am conducting a study examining the motivators for persistence among low socioeconomic (SES) students in higher education.

If you are (a) a low income student (based on your parent[s] income; (b) a first generation student (neither parent has attended college); and (c) successfully beyond your 2nd year in college, you are eligible to participate in this study. Completing this survey will require that you answer demographic questions about your background and reflect on your experiences as a low SES student at California State University, Long Beach. The study consists of an online questionnaire that takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Please note that all data will be stored on a secured, encrypted network hosted by QuestionPro.com; however, confidentially cannot be guaranteed with electronic data collection and this survey should be regarded only as safe as routine electronic transmissions. Additionally, aggregate data may be provided to the Student Life & Development and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Offices.

Your confidentiality is of utmost importance to this study and will be maintained to the degree permitted by the technology of the data collection; therefore, the responses you provide will not be reported in connection with your name in any way. Should you agree to participate, you are completely free to discontinue participation at any time. You may also leave any individual questions unanswered without consequence and still remain a part of the study. There are no direct benefits to you from participating in this study. The only identifiable risk to you as a participant in this study is that you may have to recall challenges or difficult times you have faced as a student during your time thus far at CSULB. As a participant in this study you will have the opportunity to enter a raffle for an iPod shuffle and three $10.00 gift certificate of your choice as a token of appreciation whether or not you complete the entire survey. Please note that your participation in this research study will contribute to a limited body of research about your particular student population.

Please feel free to contact me for personal consultation at (562) 714-5119 or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. My thesis chair, Dr. Anna Ortiz, will also be available to discuss any issues that may arise from this study by calling (562) 985-4517 or by emailing her at [email protected]. In addition, for questions or issues that arise beyond the scope of my training, I recommend the following on-campus services for CSULB student participants only: Health Resource Center (562) 985-4609, Counseling and Psychological Services (562) 985-4001, and Student Life & Development (562) 985-4181. For questions regarding your rights as a research participant, you may call the CSULB Office of University Research at (562) 985-5314 (Foundation Building - Suite 310). The final thesis will be available for review through the CSULB library.

Thank you,

Christopher J. Nellum
