NationalIdentity

Hello:

You are invited to participate in our survey for a research paper on plural nationalities.

Approximately 50 people who identify strongly with more than one nationality, such as immigrants, Third Culture Kids or Cross Cultural Kids, are asked to answer some questions about their feelings on the subject.

It will take approximately 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Your participation in this study is completely voluntary, all of the questions are optional. However, if you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, you can withdraw from the survey at any point.

Your survey responses will be strictly confidential and data from this research will be reported only in the aggregate. Your information will be coded and will remain confidential. If you have questions at any time about the survey or the procedures, please contact the survey researcher at the email address specified below.

Thank you very much for your time and support.

Please start with the survey now by clicking on the Continue button below.

Citizenship

If your country does not appear on the list, please enter it in the textbox.
How did you become a citizen of ${piping_text}?
When did you become a citizen of ${piping_text}?

I got it as...

Nationality
How many nationalities do you identify with?

For the purposes of this survey, please only consider those nationalities which are a significant part of your identity (e.g. not your grandfather's country of origin)
Why don't you identify with any nationality?
What ${piping_text}nationality are you? [Name one]
What ${piping_text}nationality are you? [Name one]
What ${piping_text}nationality are you? [Name one]
What ${piping_text}nationality are you? [Name one]
Do both/all of the countries you consider yourself a national of allow plural citizenships?
Do you hold citizenships for all your nationalities?
Why did you choose not to hold citizenships to all your nationalities?
How did you choose which citizenship(s) to hold?
What is your standard "no time for explanation" response when asked "What nationality are you?"
What is your standard "I can give a short explanation" response when asked "What nationality are you?"

Let's talk "political schizophrenia". Have you noticed that there are certain days on which you feel more a national of Country A, and others upon which you feel more a national of Country B? If so, what kind of things do these temporary changes depend on?
Have you ever come into contact with somebody who accused you of "political bigamy", e.g. by insisting that you must choose one nationality and stick to it, or saying you're a bad, unpatriotic citizen for holding two nationalities?
Could you describe one such event?
Have you found that certain groups of people (themselves holding single nationalities) are, as a general rule, more open to the concept of plural nationality/citizenship than others?
Which groups have you found decidedly more tolerant?
Which groups have you found significantly less tolerant?
Imagine yourself watching a sporting event or other competition in which representatives of your countries of nationality are competing against each other. Who do you cheer on? Do you have a system for situations such as these (e.g. does the country of preference change according to the sport/competition)?

You cheer on...
Have you ever considered the question of "What would I do if my countries ended up on opposite sides during a war?"
Imagine your countries ended up on opposite sides during a war. Assuming you had the skills to do any of the following, and were not a pacifist, would you:
Have you ever found yourself thinking that, instead of living in Countries A or B of which you are a national, you might, ironically, feel better in Country Z, in which you would be a foreigner (since then you would always know your status, whereas in Countries A and B you might alternate between being a national and a foreigner)?
Have you ever been accused of "political opportunism", ie. keeping a second citizenship for the political/economic benefits only?
How great a part do political/economic benefits play in your decision to hold 2 or more citizenships?
What do you think of those who practise "political opportunism", ie. keeping a second citizenship for the political/economic benefits only?
Have you ever truly wished to only have one nationality, to have things simple and easy?

In social situations (that have nothing to do with filling out forms and other "formal declarations" of nationality), do you usually:

Languages
Particularly if you grew up in a multilingual environment, does the concept of a "first" language apply to you, or is it more an issue of several "first ex-aequo" languages (that is, tied for first place)?

Are you fluent in your mother tongue(s)?

Have you found that you prefer to do certain things in one language, but others in a different one (e.g. writing essays in Language #1, but conducting phone calls in Language #2)?
think in?
dream in?
count in?
pray in?
get upset in?
Are you good at keeping your languages separate?
If you do mix them up, how do "mother tongue" speakers of the language react?
