Study Objective: This study seeks to identify and describe the specific skills and strategies that middle school students (grades 6, 7, and 8) use to locate information on the Internet. A series of Internet search tasks will be presented to the students. Observations and verbal protocols will be used to identify the skills and strategies that are utilized to locate information. Interviews will also be conducted to document how adolescents learn to search the Internet.
(Pilot study for dissertation work.)
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to gather data on the skills and strategies used during search tasks on the Internet. The results will enable the researcher to better understand the processes involved while adolescents search for and locate information on the Internet. The researcher will investigate the following research questions:
1) Does Internet usage play a role in the successful and efficient access to information on the Internet by adolescents?
2) Does prior knowledge and self-selection of a topic play a role in the successful and efficient access to information on the Internet by adolescents?
