Dissertation for MBA - Identify motivational sources for R&D staff through the use of integrate taxonomy of motivation

Project Abstract

Hypothesis
The traditional and current motivational models as Klein (1989) pointed out are splintered and perplexing theories of motivation that confuse practitioners in applying them to work situations. Additional, these models do not address the current diversity of behaviour found in organisations today, Beauvais (1995), especially Research and Development personnel.
To identify the key drivers that motivates R&D community in the telecommunication industry. A model must be derived from the current and traditional motivational theories; the model must be simple to apply or to assist the practitioners in their work to address motivation of their personnel.
The theories that will be reviewed starts of with the traditional motivational theories:
− Need theories; Maslow (1943), McClelland (1975), Hertzberg (1959)
− Expectancy theories; Vroom (1964)
− Goal theories; Lock (1981)
And them the more current:
− Self concept; Beauvais (1995)
Additionally, the model needs to take account of other areas of motivational theory such as job design, reward and recognition, career development for the R&D personnel
The review of the above will focus on:
− Identifying how the theory can be applied to R&D community
− Which factors are more prominent for the R&D community
− How inter related the factors between the theories and how to developed a model from them.
