Applied research- Research which aims to explore the possibility of new applications in the form of devices, processes or applications that may be derived from basic research.

Experimental development- The application of knowledge acquired from applied research with the aim of improving the efficiency or capacity of a new material, equipment, system or process. It includes conceptual formulation, design, and testing of products/processes/services alternatives, the construction of prototypes, and the operation of initial scaled-down systems or pilot plants.
