RFID

Dear Member,

You will be aware that we are currently running a Task Force on the issue of RFID and its use in the automotive supply chain.

As part of the process of identifying the extent of use of this technology in the sector today, we would like you to answer a small number of questions. The process should take a few minutes and is automated to be as efficient as possible.

I would ask you to respond quickly and by 8th February if possible.

If you have any queries please contact myself on 00 32 2706 8282 or Tatiana on 00 32 2706 8284.

Regards

Mark Morgan

(1) General information - Page 1 of 3
Which are the services your firm offers?
Which vehicle manufacturers do you work for?
Which countries do you operate in?
What was your turnover in EUR in 2006?
How many vehicles did you handle in 2006?
How many people did you employ in 2006 (on average)?

I fully understand the potential of RFID.
I fully understand the differences between low and high frequency tags.
I fully understand the differences between active and passive tags.
I am fully aware of the advantages and disadvantages of the different RFID technologies available.
I am fully aware of the investments required to build up a suitable RFID infrastructure.
I am fully aware of the costs of RFID tags.
What do you see as the main advantages of RFID for the automotive industry in general?
Do you see any potential for RFID in the automotive supply chains, and if so, where?
How would you see the overall economic viability of RFID in automotive (now, and in the future)?

Please assess the following factors regarding the extent to which they pose an obstacle to a more widespread utilisation of RFID on a scale of 'no obstacle' to 'very strong obstacle'?
No obstacle
Low obstacle
Medium obstacle
Strong obstacle
Very strong obstacle
Current cost of RFID tags
Likely future cost of RFID tags
Current cost of required infrastructure
Likely future cost of required infrastructure
Current robustness of RFID technology
Likely future robustness of RFID technology
Lack of standards within the same supply chain (i.e. same vehicle manufacturer)
Lack of standards across different supply chains (i.e. different vehicle manufacturers)
Lack of willingness of vehicle manufacturers to support implementation of RFID
Existing identification systems, such as bar-codes (little additional value from RFID)
Are there any other significant obstacles?

(3) Specific business case - Page 3 of 3
What specific tasks do you think RFID can help your firm with?
Do you use RFID, and if so, where?
If not, do you know of any specific automotive examples where RFID has been implemented? Please give examples.
If not, have you ever considered RFID? What was the outcome and why?
What rough breakdown of cost did you come up with when considering RFID?

I think RFID offers a clear potential for immediate cost savings in the supply chain.
I think bar-code (or similar older technologies) and RFID technology are complimentary.
I think RFID has little to offer where a bar-code system (or similar older technologies) is already in place.
My customer is likely to help with the investments required.
If I implement RFID, it will be entirely at my own risk.
RFID will help us win more business in the future.
RFID will help us be more competitive in the future.
My customers demand that we implement RFID.

Please consider the following scenario: The vehicle manufacturer(s) started adding a durable standardised RFID tag to their cars, designed to stay with the car until its end of live (ELV). Estimate how much cost savings could be achieved in your operations if all vehicles were equipped with such a tag. If possible, please differentiate between a read-only tag and a read/write tag. The former would simply provide a means of uniquely identifying the vehicle (e.g. through its VIN number), while the latter would allow you to store additional information with the vehicle, while it is with you.
