INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN A RESEARCH PROJECT
PROJECT INFORMATION STATEMENT

Google Magnet: Web Search Engine

Dear Participant,

You are invited to participate in a research project being conducted by RMIT University. This information sheet describes the project in straightforward language, or ‘plain English’. Please read this sheet carefully and be confident that you understand its contents before deciding whether to participate. If you have any questions about the project, please contact one of the investigators.

This research is being conducted by students from the School of Business Information Technology at RMIT University. The aims are to identify the major reasons why Google web search has become the most popular tool. We will ask the students’ experience and satisfaction of using Google search engine. This research project has been approved by the RMIT Human Research Ethics Committee. The research is funded by the researchers.

You have been selected as a volunteer for this survey. You have been identified as you have experienced with using the Internet and search engine.

A total of 30 students will be approached to participate in this study. You are free to refuse to participate in this study if you wish as participation in this study is entirely voluntary. The main data collection method is a survey questionnaire.

If you agree to participate in this research, you will be required to complete a questionnaire, which will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Examples of the questions asked are:
1. Do you use Google as a search engine?
2. Why do you use Google search engine?
3. How often do you use Google search engine?

All information gathered during the course of this research including your responses will be securely stored for a period of two months in the School of Business Information Technology, RMIT University and can only be accessed by the researchers. After two months, it will be destroyed. The data collected will be analysed and results published in academic journals without including information that can potentially identify you.

There are no foreseen risks associated with your participation in this research project. Additionally, through this plain language statement, it will give you time to evaluate whether or not you wish to participate in this study. There are no penalties if you decide not to participate. The benefits of participating in this research include helping developers to understand the people’s satisfaction of using the search engines and to enhance the usability of search engines.

Any information that you provide can be disclosed only if (1) it is to protect you or others from harm, (2) a court order is produced, or (3) you provide the researchers with written permission.

Due to the nature of this data collection process, we are not obtaining written informed consent from you. Instead, we assume that you have given consent by your completion and return of the questionnaire. Your participation in this research is voluntary. As a participant, you have the right to withdraw your participation at any time; have any unprocessed data withdrawn and destroyed, provided it can be reliably identified, and provided that so doing does not increase your risk; and have any questions answered at any time.
